 On March 26, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama proposed 71 candidates to serve as District Chief Executives (DCEs) in eight regions of Ghana. This step aligns with the provisions of Article 243(1) of Ghana's 1992 Constitution and Section 20(1) of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936). The nominees must first receive approval from their respective District Assemblies before officially taking office.  



The breakdown of nominees by region is as follows:  


- **Volta Region:** 17 nominees (covering 18 districts)  

- **Oti Region:** 9 nominees (all districts filled)  

- **Ahafo Region:** 6 nominees  

- **Bono Region:** 10 nominees (all districts filled)  

- **Bono East Region:** 9 nominees (all districts filled)  

- **Savannah Region:** 5 nominees (all districts filled)  

- **North East Region:** 6 nominees (all districts filled)  

- **Western North Region:** 9 nominees (all districts filled)  




This initiative reflects President Mahama’s dedication to reinforcing local governance and improving administrative efficiency at the district level. Once confirmed, the appointed DCEs will oversee the execution of government programs and drive development projects in their districts.  



The announcement has drawn interest from various groups, with hopes that the new appointees will tackle regional issues and support broader national progress. The final decision on these nominations now lies with the respective District Assemblies.
